The Exploitation Fleet and Ports Department was established in 1965 after its curriculum was separated from the Department of Navigation. This act was the result of the necessity to enhance the specialized training of navigators, especially those for the merchant marine. At the beginning the training equipment was scarce, there were no study rooms, textbooks and other teaching materials. Only after it moved its premises to the western building in 1976 were specialized study rooms allotted and equipped. The necessary boating base was built supplied with 10-oar cutters, rowing and sailing boats of the Yal 6 type, sailing yachts and a power-driven cutter. The educational level is maintained in accordance with IMO requirements.
