Bachelor

Admission criteria

The admission of foreign students in bachelor programs is determined based on the applicant’s secondary (highschool) education documents.  If the secondary school diploma is issued by an institution outside Bulgaria it must be recognized by a Regional Inspectorate of Education of Republic of Bulgaria.

For all programmes taught in English language the applicant will take part in the selection procedure with the following secondary school (highschool) results:

  • The average secondary school diploma grade
  • The grade of Mathematics from the secondary school diploma
  • The grade of English from the secondary school diploma.

The applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Each of the grades in Mathematics, English and Secondary school diploma average grade (G.P.A) must be higher than 62% of the maximum grade according to the grading scale in the country where the highschool diploma was obtained.
  2. The application documents must be submitted no later than mid-August of the respective academic year.
  3. The applicant must verify his/her English language proficiency by presenting an internationally recognized certificate confirming B2 or higher level of language proficiency according to the Common European Language Framework.

* This condition does not apply for applicants from countries where English is an official language.

Applicants who don’t have a good command of the English language but would like to study in a programme taught in English, can first join the 9-months preparatory course in English language in the NVNA.

Application documents

  1. Secondary School (Highschool) Diploma.
  2. Diploma Supplement.  In case there is no grading scale attached to the diploma, candidates have to present an official document with the grading system description.
  3. An official document issued by an accredited body certifying the applicant’s right to pursue their studies at higher education institutions in the country where secondary education was obtained. This document might be issued by the secondary school the applicant graduated from. It must contain the following text: “The education received gives the right to the applicant to continue his/her studies in higher education institutions in …………. (Country of the school).”
  4. Original document for financial support by parent/relative. (For non-EU citizens, needed for visa D application process)
  5. Medical check for color blindness/deficiency. (optional)
  6. Letter of Authorization for the Regional Inspectorate of Education. (optional)
  7. Copy of passport/ID card.
  8. Application form.
  9. Four photos – passport format (dimensions: 4.5/3.5 cm).

Documents specified in points 1, 2 and 3 must be:

  • Notary certified copies;
  • Certified in accordance with the international requirements:
    • for countries that have a mutual legal assistance agreement with Bulgaria concerning certification of documents, the agreement requirements shall apply;
    • for member countries under the Hague Convention (https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/conventions/status-table/?cid=41), documents are certified with Apostille stamps;
    • for all other countries, documents must be certified by the Ministry of Education (and/or Ministry of Healthcare), Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the applicant’s country of residence and by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the respected country;
  • Translated in Bulgarian language by sworn translator, with notary verification on translator’s signature (best to be done in Bulgaria).

Application procedure

  1. The candidate sends scanned copies of the documents to NVNA International Students Front-Office at Int_students@nvna.eu for prior examination. All pages including stamps must be scanned.
  2. The International Students Front-Office examines the documents and contacts the candidate.
  3. Upon approval by the International Students Front-Office, the candidate (personally, or by authorized third party) sends the entire set of duly legalized and translated documents to a  Regional Inspectorate of Education of Republic of Bulgaria. . Inspectorate of Education reviews the documents and issues a certificate of recognition of Secondary School Diploma. The review period takes from two weeks up to a month.
  4. Once the Regional Inspectorate of Education has issued the certificate of recognition of Secondary School Diploma, the candidate or the authorized third party receive it in person at the office of the Regional Inspectorate of Education. The applicant can then proceed with his/her application at the university
  1. For EU applicants: If all the criteria are met, the applicant is ranked and accepted as a student in the Naval Academy. No later than 10 days before the start of the academic year, the applicant must pay the tuition fee for the first semester by transferring the payment amount to the NVNA bank account*
  2. After successful issuance of the Ministry of Education and Science certificate, but no later than 10 days before the start of the academic year, the applicant must pay the tuition fee for the first semester by transferring the payment amount to the NVNA bank account*.
  3. Upon receiving the payment for tuition fee, International Students Front-Office sends to the candidate the original documents necessary for visa D application:
    A certificate issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science;
    An assurance of admission issued by the International Students Front-Office of NVNA
  4. The applicant personally files his/her application for visa D in the diplomatic or consular missions of the Republic of Bulgaria in his/her own country of origin. In case visa “D” is denied, the candidate can receive a refund of his tuition fee payment in accordance to the NVNA’s refund policy.

  • Admissions NON EU

Bachelor

    •  Upon approval, the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science issues a certificate necessary for visa D application.
    • In case the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science needs additional documents or endorsements, it sends an official letter to NVNA in which it explains the reasons for not issuing the certificate. The International Students Front-Office notifies the applicant who may amend his/her application documents and re-submit them for review after the application deadline.
  2. After successful issuance of the Ministry of Education and Science certificate, but no later than 10 days before the start of the academic year, the applicant must pay the tuition fee for the first semester by transferring the payment amount to the NVNA bank account*.
