Having completed the training provided by the course the persons who successfully finish this course should:
– have acquired knowledge about: the requirements for taking over, keeping and handing over the watch and the information exchanged between the able seafarer handing over and the one taking over the watch; orders and instructions of the watchkeeping officer related to watchkeeping and working in the engine room; general knowledge of the principles of work and operation of the main propulsion complex, the main and auxiliary machinery and associated systems, monitoring temperatures, pressures and levels; principles of operation and use of fuel, oil, bilge, ballast systems and procedures for taking bunkers, transferring and submitting / disposal of fuels, oils, bilge water and ballast; working principles and operation of valves, pumps, hoisting equipment, waterproof and fire doors; the units and safe operation of the ship’s electrical equipment; methods and safe practices for maintenance / servicing of equipment in the Engine Boiler Room (EBR) and using hand and power tools; precautions against marine pollution and safety measures for carrying out the activities inherent to the position; and
– be able to: communicate in English with the watchkeeping officer in the EBR and other persons using the correct terminology for keeping watch and in emergencies; to measure / read correctly temperatures, pressures, levels; to start and operate/maintain pumps, compressors, separators, boilers and other mechanisms in the ER under the guidance of the watchkeeping officer; implement safe methods in performing welding, repair and paint operations, when working at heights and entering and working in enclosed spaces; to properly process and deposit waste generated in the EBR and on board the ship.
Course requirements:
The purpose of the course is to provide training to seafarers willing to acquire professional competency “ABLE SEAFARER ENGINE”, as prescribed by Regulation III/5 of The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW’78), as amended and to acquire the knowledge and skills specified in the table of Section А-III/5 of the Appendix to the Convention. The preparatory course meets the requirements of Article 37, para. 8, item a of Regulation No 6 of 05.04.2012 On Seafarers’ Competency in the Republic of Bulgaria.
Requirements to participants:
To be admitted to the course trainees should meet the following requirements:
– To be over 18 years of age,
– To hold a high school diploma,
– To be physically fit to work at sea,
– To hold a certificate of competency “Ship Motorman”,
– To have at least 12 month actual sea service as a “Ship motorman” with the engine department of a vessel of propulsion power of 750kW or more after acquiring the competency of ship motorman.
Before the beginning of the course, the training institution shall check the documents of each candidate to ascertain their compliance with the entry standards according to its QMS.
