Those who successfully complete the four-year full-time course of study in the specialty graduate with the educational and qualification degree of “bachelor”. They can hold the positions of “assistant captain” and “senior assistant captain” on all types of ships in civil shipping, as well as be appointed to the following shore positions: ship manager, ship agent, broker, etc.

Fundamental training is provided by studying general education and general engineering disciplines: higher mathematics, physics, computer science, electronics, technical mechanics, electrical engineering, English, etc.

The profiled academic disciplines are: maritime affairs, navigation, ship maneuver management, technical means of navigation, astronavigation, shipping safety, theory, arrangement and ensuring seaworthiness of the ship, theory of maneuvering, geodesy, cartography and location, meteorology and oceanography, ship cargo operations, etc.

The curriculum for the specialty also includes one-time additional training under Appendix 1 to Art. 4, para. 2 and 3 of the Transitional and Final Provisions to the Regulation on Amendments and Supplements to Regulation No. 6 of 2012 on the Competence of Seafarers in the Republic of Bulgaria. In this way, those who successfully complete the training course, in addition to a higher education diploma, receive all the necessary certificates for successfully completing their cadet internship and for appearing before the Maritime Administration Agency for an exam to obtain a certificate for a watch officer.

The educational and material base is made up of modern complexes: planetarium; complex navigation simulators “NT-PRO-5000”, laboratories for technical means of navigation, “ECDIS” simulators for working with electronic navigation charts, an “Automated Navigation Plotting” room, a laboratory for maritime affairs and ship management, rooms for rigging and ship operation, GMDSS, VTMS, etc. It provides a modern scientific and applied level of training in all mandatory disciplines of the specialty, in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization and the Maritime Administration Agency.

The training includes annual training practice in the conditions of a training camp and on ships of shipping companies-partners of the Naval Academy. The voyages are carried out mainly in the Black and Mediterranean Seas and in the Atlantic Ocean.

The training course ends with passing state exams in the specialty and in English.

After additional training in a master’s program, graduates acquire the educational and qualification degree “Master” and the right to take an exam for the qualification of captains of all types of ships in civil shipping.
